Auana: know before you go

The show itself is easy to love. The small stuff (where to park, when to arrive, what to wear, whether the kids will cope) is what trips people up. Here it is in one place.

Getting there and parking

The theater is inside the OUTRIGGER Waikiki Beachcomber Hotel at 2300 Kalakaua Avenue, and the hotel does not validate show parking. If you are staying in Waikiki, walk. If you drive, the International Market Place garage across the street is the easy option (about $4 for three hours with a $25 purchase), and the Royal Hawaiian Center next door validates with a purchase too, though its desk closes at 8 PM. One reviewer parked at the wrong hotel, walked the long way round and made the curtain "with a minute to spare". Arrive 30 to 45 minutes early; doors open about 45 minutes before the show.

What to wear, eat and bring

Dress is resort casual: aloha shirts, sundresses and shorts with a nice top are all normal, and nobody dresses up. Bring a light layer, because the air conditioning is cool after a warm evening. Eat beforehand; the bar sells drinks and snacks at theater prices (around $6 for water and $17 for a cocktail), and outside food and drink are not allowed. Flash photography is not allowed during the show, but there are photo spots in the lobby, and the cast often poses for pictures afterwards.

Bringing kids

Auana is a family show, and Cirque du Soleil shows in general are kid-friendly: there is comedy, music and nothing frightening. Children 3 to 11 pay a child price, children 2 and under are free on a parent's lap, and guests under 18 must be with an adult. At 80 minutes with no intermission it suits children who can sit through a film; pick the 5:30 PM show for younger ones, and an aisle seat for easy exits.
